YONECO has introduced a new project which is aimed at enhancing the rights of communities around Njereza Mining Sites in the area of Traditional Authority Mponda in Magochi district.
The project which is being funded by Southern Africa Trust (SAT) is expected to amplify the voices of communities and beneficiaries of mining activities in the district, and enhance the capacity of community members to demand transparency and accountability from miners and mining companies.
During an inception meeting with members of Mangochi District Environmental Subcommittee Committee (DESC), stakeholders expressed their commitment to ensure successful implementation of the project. Further to this, the committee also requested YONECO to address various Gender Based Violence (GBV) related issues in mining.
The project which is titled ‘Making Community Voices Count in Mining Areas’ will be implemented for a period of 1 year.
